Juneteenth is June 19th!

Juneteenth is a portmanteau of the words June and nineteenth. On the historic day of June 19, 1865 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston with an executive decree to declare slavery had ended for some 250,000 enslaved black people in Texas. Though the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed in 1863, it wasn’t until years later in 1865 that slaves were freed in states that had remained under Confederate control.   In East Austin, the Rosewood neighborhood became home to much of the local minority community as a result of segregationist and racist zoning policies beginning in the 1910’s.
